Kohler One Cylinder K-Series Governor Adjustment

To complete this governor adjustment you will need:

· Two 7/16 inch wrenches

· One small pair of vice-grips

To Adjust Governor, follow these steps:

1. Ensure linkage between the governor arm and the carburetor has free movement, but not overly loose.

2. Loosen clamping bolt on the governor arm.

3. Clamp the pair of vice-grips on the shaft coming through the governor arm.

4. Ensure the shaft is free and movable inside the governor arm.

5. Gently turn the vice-grips counter-clockwise until the shaft stops moving.

6. Pull the governor arm until the carburetor is in the wide-open position.

7. Now, tighten the clamping bolt. (may require two wrenches)
NOTE: Make sure nothing moves when tightening the clamping bolt!

8. Remove the vice-grips.

If the above eight steps are followed correctly, you should be able to easily move the carburetor linkage from idle to wide-open position.

To Set RPM, follow these steps:

1. RPM is set by adjusting the amount of spring tension pulling on the bottom of the governor arm.

2. To increase RPM, the spring must pull harder (have more tension); or if the governor arm has multiple holes, adjustment is made by moving the spring downward.

3. To decrease or lower the RPM, simply reverse the procedure in the above step.

General Guidelines:

  • Be cautious of setting maximum RPM as exactly stated in your pulling rules. For example, our rules states 4,000 RPM as maximum. When checked by track officials, if your RPM reads 4,001, you are illegal. Therefore, we recommend you set your RPM at or around 3,950...or what ever you are comfortable with, in order to be safe and compliant.

  • Keep in mind, RPM’s are not controlled by computers, so be aware that you must allow for a reasonable margin of error, or variance, when measuring RPM’s.
